Cookies and session recording

Last updated: 24 October 2026

This notice explains the cookies and browser storage Perspicax uses, how we record visits to our website and app, what we mask, and how you can control it. It is part of our <a href="/legal/privacy">Privacy policy</a>.

1. What we store in your browser

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Session storage and local storage are similar browser features that keep small amounts of data on your device. Perspicax uses the following:

NameTypePurposeDuration
pcx_aidFirst-party cookieAnonymous visitor ID. It links your visits, recordings, scans and events, and moves your guest scans into your account when you sign up. Scripts can read it so the session recorder can use it. Set with SameSite=Lax.2 years
Sign-in session cookieFirst-party cookie, httpOnlyKeeps you signed in after you enter the one-time code we email you. Scripts cannot read it.Up to one year, or until you sign out
pcx_rec_sessionSession storageIdentifies the current recording session.Cleared when you close the tab
pcx_recording_consentLocal storageRemembers your choice in the recording consent banner. Only used when the banner is shown.Until you clear your browser storage
Stripe cookiesThird-party cookies, on Stripe pages onlySet by Stripe on its hosted checkout and customer portal pages, for its own purposes such as processing payments and preventing fraud. See Stripe's privacy policy.Set by Stripe

2. How session recording works

Every visit to the Perspicax website and app is recorded with rrweb, an open-source library that runs in your browser. Instead of a video of your screen, it records the structure of the page and each change to it, so we can replay what happened in the session.

A recording includes:

  • changes to the page as you browse
  • clicks, scrolls and mouse movement
  • text you type, except in masked fields

With each recording session we also store your IP address, your user agent (browser and device), your country (worked out from your IP address), the referrer, and campaign parameters in the link you followed (utm_*, gclid, fbclid, msclkid and ref).

Guests are recorded under the anonymous ID in pcx_aid. When you sign up or sign in, your earlier anonymous visits, scans and events are linked to your account. A single recording session lasts at most 60 minutes.

We use recordings to fix problems, understand how people use Perspicax, improve the website and app, and detect abuse.

3. What we mask

Masking happens in your browser, before any data is sent to us. We mask:

  • password fields
  • one-time sign-in codes
  • payment card fields
  • other secrets

Card payments are entered on Stripe's own pages, which we do not record.

Other text you type is recorded, such as your name, email address or a message in our contact form. Please do not type anything into Perspicax that you would not want recorded.

Where the law requires consent for session recording, we may show a banner and record only if you agree. Your choice is stored in pcx_recording_consent in your browser. Where no banner is shown, visits are recorded as described in this notice.

5. How to control cookies and recording

  • Browser settings. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and site data. If you block all cookies, sign-in will not work.
  • Delete cookies. Deleting pcx_aid stops your future anonymous visits from being linked to earlier ones. It does not delete data we already hold, and if you sign in again, new visits are linked to your account.
  • Consent banner. Where a banner is shown, you can decline recording. To change your choice later, clear this site's storage in your browser and reload the page.
  • Delete recordings. Email [email protected] to ask us to delete recordings of your visits. Deleting your account also deletes its recordings.

6. What we do not use

We do not use advertising cookies. We do not load third-party analytics or advertising scripts on our pages. We do not sell recordings or use them for advertising.

7. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice when we change the cookies, storage or recording we use. We will post the new version on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
