What are Content Credentials?
Content Credentials (C2PA) are a signed record inside an image file that says how it was made, including whether AI generated it. Perspicax reads them on every upload and shows who signed the file and what it claims. When the record is missing, as it often is after a re-save, TrueEye 2.1 checks the pixels.
What Perspicax shows
- Whether the file carries Content Credentials (C2PA)
- The tool that made the image, as the file records it
- Who signed the record
- The IPTC digital source type, such as "trained algorithmic media"
- Content Credentials (C2PA)Live
- SynthID watermark checkSupported
SynthID, Google's invisible watermark, is a different signal from Content Credentials. Perspicax supports SynthID checks too.
Which generators sign their images
- OpenAI: Content Credentials on images from ChatGPT and its API.
- Google: Content Credentials on Nano Banana Pro images in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads.
- ByteDance: Content Credentials on images from CapCut and Dreamina.
- Black Forest Labs: Content Credentials on FLUX images from its API and Playground.
- Others vary: xAI has published no provenance statement for Grok images, and Midjourney has no confirmed C2PA.
Why the label is often missing
Content Credentials live in the file's metadata. A screenshot, a re-save or an upload to most social platforms strips them: in our sample of GPT Image 2 images collected from X, none still carried them. We made a photo with Google's model ourselves, and one re-save erased its signed label.
Questions
How do I check C2PA on an image?
Drop the image above. Perspicax reads its Content Credentials, if it has any, and shows who signed them and what they say. It checks the pixels at the same time.
Can C2PA be removed?
Yes, easily, and usually by accident: a screenshot or a re-save drops the metadata that holds it. A missing label is not evidence that an image is real.
What is the C2PA metadata standard?
An open standard from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity. It defines how apps record, sign and verify the history of a media file, including AI generation.
Do Content Credentials prove an image is real?
No. They record what the signing tool says about the file. A valid signature shows the record wasn't changed; it does not prove that the scene is true.
Does Perspicax add Content Credentials to my images?
No. It reads them and never changes your file.
